New Year New Beginnings

Writer: Beacon Photographic ClubBeacon Photographic Club

After a month away from the club, is was good to get back to the Artz Centre for our first event of the year. We didn't start the new year in a big way, instead, we went small! Our first event was a macro night, shooting shells, pine cones, screws, flowers etc. Not all of our members had a macro lens, some had extension tubes, some had macro filters that screwed onto the front of their lens, while others just used their normal lens & cropped in using photo editing software later on.

We used a combination of nature light and painting with light to light our subjects & some members even used flash. We also had different backgrounds, from black, white & even pink paper. It was all about teaching members, that it isn't just about getting close to your subject, you have to think about the light & how it's lit, the background if you're including it & if it compliments it. It surprising how many people say they are just going to shoot some macro stuff, pull out their camera & zoom into an object & think that's it.

I've included some images from members below.

The following week, it should of been some sports photography, photographing a hockey match. Due to a frozen pitch, this had to be called off & I'm waiting to hear back when this will be rescheduled.

The following week it was a constructive feedback night. These are a great for members to learn how to give constructive feedback to others & take for their own images, for self improvement. The idea behind it, is members will start to give their own images constructive feedback & think about a shot more before they press the shutter or when editing. It's really helped a lot of members improve over the years.

The week after we had some studio session time with the lovely Gwen. She brought in a lovely outfit of a traditional Indian dress, scarf and head jewellery, as well as some other fantastic outfits to wear, that our members could photograph. The night didn't start off as planned & for the first time ever, we had some major technical difficulty's. We don't normally run into any problems, but for some reason on this night, if it could go wrong, it did! Took about half an hour, but we got there & the members to capture some wonderful shots. Once again, Gwen was fantastic with us & we couldn't of asked for a better model. Again, images below from some of the members.
